The Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) allows Australian employers to address labour shortages by hiring skilled overseas workers when the local labour force is unavailable.

There are three streams under the 482 visa: (1) Short-term stream for those with occupations in the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL); (2) Medium-term stream for workers with occupations in the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL); and (3) Labour agreement stream for those with occupations with an employer who has a labour agreement.

There are common documents that are essential when applying for the 482 visa. The documents provide proof that you meet the eligibility criteria to apply for this visa. This blog delves into the essential documents required so you can be better prepared before embarking on your employer-sponsored visa application journey.

1. Identity Documents

One of the fundamental requirements of any visa application is to prove your identity. Your passport serves as the key document for this purpose in order to establish your age, nationality, and details about your current visa if you are in Australia when you lodge your SC 482 visa application.

If you have had a change in your name due to marriage or other reasons, you should include proof of the name change by furnishing documents such as your marriage certificate or other legal documentation.

2. Proof of qualifications, experience and skills

To be eligible for the SC 482 visa, the visa applicant must have relevant qualifications and work experience in their nominated occupation.

    i. Qualifications

To show that you meet the qualification requirement of your nominated occupation, you can furnish your academic documents such as your degree certificate and transcripts from your respective education institutions, whether in Australia or offshore.

     ii. Experience documents

You must prove a minimum of two years of work experience in the last five years to qualify for the SC 482 visa. This work experience must be in the nominated occupation or related field, and it must have been full-time for 38 hours per week. If you have worked part-time, your hours can be pro-rated to meet the two year minimum requirement.

In order to prove that you meet the experience requirement, you must provide the following documents.

Service letters: You can obtain service letters from your previous and current places of employment to show that you meet the experience requirements. The service letters must include your employment duration, your position details, the number of hours worked per week, job tasks and duties, and your pay. The letters must be written on your employer's letterhead and include details of your supervisor, manager or Human Resources.

Employment contract: You can also furnish your employment contracts to prove that you have work experience in your nominated or related occupation for two years.

Payslips: To further strengthen your application, submit payslips for the work experience that you are claiming, which show the number of hours worked and your pay rates. While it is tedious to provide all of your payslips for the entire duration, you can provide few payslips for the start and end of each of your employment periods and a few payslips from each year in-between.

The above documents will provide evidence of that you have the required years of work experience and that you performed tasks at the skill level of your nominated occupation.

     iii. Skill Assessment

Some applicants for the SC 482 visa must meet the mandatory skill assessment requirement for their nominated occupation. For instance, common occupations such as chef, carpenter and motor mechanic require a mandatory skill assessment. The skill assessment must be within the three years before lodging your SC 482 visa application. You must furnish proof of your skill assessment along with your SC 482 visa application. This can include your positive skill assessment outcome letter from Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS or your skill assessment reference number if you have just commenced the application

3. Proof of your English language proficiency

Another important aspect of the SC 482 visa is that you meet the English language requirements. If you are not exempted from this requirement, you can provide proof of your English language test scores.

For the short-term stream you must have an IELTS overall score of 5.0 with a minimum of 4.5 in each band or PTE overall score of 36 with at least 30 in each band. On the other hand, for the medium-term stream, you must have an IELTS overall score of 5.0 with at least 5 in each component or PTE overall score of 36 with a minimum score of 36 in each band.

You must ensure that the test results you provide were obtained within the three years prior to submitting your SC 482 visa application.

4. Character documents

To make a valid and compliant visa application for the SC 482 visa, you must meet Australia’s character requirements. To prove this, you must provide a valid Australian Federal Police check if you have lived in Australia for a total of 12 months. Additionally, you must provide police certificates from each country where you have lived for a total of 12 months in the last 10 years since turning 16 years old. The overseas police certificates are not required if your SC 482 application is sponsored by an accredited business sponsor. Instead, you must provide a reference letter from your accredited sponsor confirming that you have no criminal record.

Character documents must also be provided by each family member over 16 years of age who applies for the Subclass 482 visa with you.

5. Health Insurance

Most Australian visas require that you have a valid health insurance cover for the duration of your stay in Australia. The SC 482 visa is not an exception to this requirement. Your and any accompanying family members must obtain Overseas Visitor Health cover for the duration of your SC 482 visa. The policy certificate will act as proof that you and your family have the necessary health cover.

6. Family documents

If you are married or in a de facto relationship and/or have any dependent children who are applying for the SC 482 visa application with you, you must provide certain documents along with the visa application. These documents include:

  • Your marriage certificate or de facto registration certificate
  • Birth certificate of any children
  • Passports of your spouse/de facto partner and children

Additionally, you will need to provide police certificates and valid health insurance covers for your accompanying family members as mentioned above.

Ensuring a smooth visa application process

The SC 482 visa is a complex visa with several eligibility criteria. The documents mentioned above play an important role in proving that you meet the requirements to apply for the SC 482 visa. By carefully preparing these documents, you can ensure that your SC 482 visa application process is smooth and stress-free.
