482 skilled occupation list
If you are applying for the Temporary Skill Shortage (SC 482) visa, your occupation is a crucial aspect of your visa application. Australian visas are designed in a manner to attract skilled migrants that Australia is in need of. In tackling this, the government has compiled a lists of skilled occupations that migrants can apply to. Unless your occupation is in the skilled occupation list, you are unlikely to be eligible for the SC 482. There are three types of occupation lists at the moment. They are the

Regional Occupation List (ROL)
The Medium to Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) has 212 occupations, while the Short Term Strategic Skills List (STSOL) has 215 occupations and the Regional Occupation List (ROL) has 77 occupations.
The differences between the lists
The 3 main lists differ on the duration of the visa, the type of visa that you can apply to, geographic location of the visa and the pathways to PR.
The Short Term Skilled Occupation Lists (STSOL) has occupations that are in short-term demand in Australia. The visas that you can apply under this list have a duration of 2 years and may be renewable for another 2 years depending on the visa type and circumstances. There are no direct PR pathways if your occupation is in this list. For example you will not be eligible for the SC 189 visa, if your occupation is on the STSOL. Even through you are eligible for skilled migration visas like the SC 190 and SC 491 the chances of you being invited are quite low. You also won’t be able to apply for the SC 186 under the Direct Entry stream. You will only be eligible to apply for the SC 186 if you go through the Temporary Residence Transition stream where you have to have held a previous SC 482 visa. One of the reason for these limitations is because your occupation is not in the long term demand to make you a permanent resident in Australia.
The Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) has occupations that are in demand in Australia for Australia’s long term economic growth. If you have a occupation under this list, the eligible visas grants you visa duration of 4 years. There are direct PR pathways if your occupation is in this list and you are eligible for many visas unlike having an occupation in the STSOL or ROL.
Regional Occupational List (ROL) has occupations that are in demand in regional areas of Australia. The visa duration for occupations under this list can be up to 4 years with a potential pathway to PR. Most of the eligible visas for occupations under this list will require the applicant to stay in their designated regional areas for a certain period of time. If you have an occupation under this visa you won’t be eligible for most of the visas that an occupation in the MLTSSL has access to.
SC 482 streams
The Temporary Skill Shortage (SC 482) visa has 3 streams. They are;

Short-term stream- The occupations that are on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List are eligible to apply under this stream.

Medium-term stream- The occupations that are in the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List are eligible to apply under this stream.

Labour agreement stream- The occupations that are eligible under this stream are the occupations that the employer has negotiated with the Australian government. This stream is customized for specific industries where there is a labour shortage. These agreements are usually with the employer and the Australian government, so occupations that may not be on the standard lists may appear in the agreement.
