Temporary Activity Visa (SC 408)- Sporting Activities

The Sporting Activities stream of the SC 408 visa, is intended for people who wish to engage in sporting activities in Australia. The applicant can apply for this visa to work in an Australian team as a player, coach, referee, or instructor, or you can participate in elite sports training through a sporting organization. Furthermore, the applicant may submit an application for the members of their family unit. Once the visa is granted, the visa holder may stay in Australia for up to two years with the members of their qualifying family who were included on the application.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Have a sponsor or a supporter

  • Be an eligible sports trainee, elite player, coach, instructor or adjudicator

  • Take part in full-time structured sports training, if applicable

  • Have a suitable formal agreement, if applicable

  • Applicant must have sufficient financial means to support themselves and their family members

  • Be a genuine temporary entrant

  • Meet health and character requirements

  • Have health insurance

Sponsorship

The sponsor will have to submit certain documents along with the visa application. The sponsor may submit a sponsorship application ID number or sponsorship transaction reference number (TRN) or a sponsor approval letter or receipt for lodging the sponsorship application.

The sponsor must also certify in writing that they will fulfill their sponsorship duties for the visa applicant and any dependent family members you listed of the visa applicant.

The sponsor should submit documents to show that they are a religious organisation that is lawfully operating in Australia.

If the sponsor is funding a sports trainee, the sponsor should provide evidence that their organization has a global reputation for producing outstanding athletes or adjudicators.

The sponsor should also have a letter of invitation for the visa applicant

Sports Trainee

If the applicant is a sports trainee, only a sports team that competes at the Australian national level is able to sponsor an applicant, but not below it.

If the applicant is a sports trainee, then the applicant should provide;

  • Evidence that they are a national competitor or adjudicator in Australia or

  • A letter attesting to your ability to compete at the Australian national level from the top sporting body in Australia or abroad

  • Evidence that the training center has a global reputation for producing world-class athletes or adjudicators.

  • Information on the full-time training program plan to undertake

Elite player, coach, instructor or adjudicator

If the applicant is an elite player, coach, instructor or adjudicator, the contract between the visa applicant and the sponsoring organisation must be provided.

The contract must contain:

  • Length of the contract

  • Remuneration

  • Duties

  • Any organisations that the applicant will work with other than the current sponsor

  • Estimated working hours

  • Dependent family members also covered by the contract

A letter of endorsement from the Australian national sporting body also should be provided and the letter should:

  • support the position

  • verify that the applicant is capable of coaching, playing, or instructing at the national level for Australia.
