804 eligibility requirements

- Meet the age requirements for receiving the Australian aged pension.
- Pass the Balance of Family test, where at least half of their children live permanently in Australia or more children live permanently in Australia than in any other country.

Meeting the balance of family test
The balance of family test is designed to determine whether the majority of a parent's children live in Australia, reflecting the parent's ties to the country.
To pass the Balance of Family test, you must have:
- More eligible children living in Australia than in any other country, or
- At least half of your children are 'eligible children' living permanently in Australia.
An 'eligible child' is defined as one who is an Australian citizen, a permanent resident residing in Australia, or a New Zealand citizen who usually lives in Australia. Importantly, children who are on temporary visas in Australia do not qualify as 'eligible' for this test.
Who is an eligible parent sponsor?
You can sponsor your parents to Australia permanently if you are a child of the parent you are intending to sponsor. You can sponsor you parents or your parent’s parents if you are;
- An Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Legally responsible for any financial obligations to the Australian government the applicant might incur.
What are assurances of support?
Assurances of support are to be provided by parent visa sponsors guaranteeing to the Department that the Parent visa applicant will not be dependant on the Australian government during the period of their stay in Australia. The parent visa sponsor is generally expected to provide Bank guarantee and term deposit to the Government.
In order to become an Assurer, you must be;
- at least 18 years of age
- an Australian resident
- able to give proof of income for the current and last financial year.
The department will inform you when and how assurances of support are to be provided pursuant to a parent visa application made by a parent.
