What is the Australian citizenship application fee?

The Australian citizenship application fee is a government charge you pay when you submit your application for citizenship. The fee varies depending on the type of citizenship you are applying for which can be by conferral or descent.

How much does it cost for an Australian citizenship application?

The below fee applies from 1st of July 2025 and is calculated in Australian Dollars (AUD)

How to pay the citizenship application fee?

Online applications: You pay at the very last step in ImmiAccount when you are lodging your citizenship application. 

Paper applications: You must pay the fee through ImmiAccount before you mail your citizenship application.

When should you pay the citizenship application fee?

You must pay it when you lodge your application. Your application will not be processed without the fee.

Are there any citizenship application fee concessions?

You can get a reduced fee, that is a concession when applying for Australian citizenship by conferral if you hold a valid 

  • A Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Australian Government
  • Or are a persons aged under 18 years listed as a dependant on a Pensioner Concession Card issued by the Australian Government 

The card must not be expired. No fee is payable for children 15 years or younger applying on the same form as a parent. Fee concessions are available for forms 1300t and 1290.

How can you apply for citizenship application fee concession?

Applicants who are eligible for a fee concession can apply

  1. Online through ImmiAccount: attach a scan of both sides of your valid Pensioner Concession Card with your citizenship application
  2. Paper: copy must be certified and attached with the citizsnship application

Are there any citizenship application fee exemptions?

You will not need to pay any fees if you are one of the following;

  • A British or Maltese former child migrant who came to Australia without your parents between 22 September 1947 and 31 December 1967 under the Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme. You will need a letter from the Child Migrants Trust confirming details of your arrival and sponsorship. Submit this letter with your application.
  • a person who served for at least 90 days in the permanent forces of the Commonwealth of Australia. You will need a letter or discharge papers from the Australian Defence Force stating your service dates. Submit this with your application.
  • a person applying under the Statelessness provision (section 21(8) of the Australian Citizenship Act 2007).

How can you apply for a citizenship application fee exemption?

You have to use a paper application if you are eligible for a fee exemption. You cannot apply online

Can you get a refund for a citizenship application?

The citizenship application fee may be refunded in full or in part at the discretion of the Department, depending on circumstances such as:

  • An earlier application is still pending;
  • The person applied due to incorrect advice from the Department;
  • The person is already an Australian citizen;
  • The wrong fee was paid.

Can you include your children in the citzenship application?

Children under 16 can be included in your citizenship application at no extra cost.

Can you hold dual citizenship in Australia?

Australia allows dual citizenship; however, you should verify your other country’s laws first, as it may not permit holding multiple nationalities.
