The Contributory Parent Visa

Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 173 & 143)

The Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 173 and 143) allows parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live, study or work in Australia.

The Contributory Parent (subclass 173) is a temporary visa that allows the applicant to live in Australia for up to two years. With this visa, you can travel to and from Australia for 2 years and be eligible to enrol in Australia’s health care system, Medicare.

The Contributory Parent (subclass 143) is a permanent visa that allows you to stay in Australia as a permanent resident. Being a holder of a SC143 visa grants you some additional benefits, including the ability to travel to and from Australia for 5 years and apply for Australian citizenship if you are eligible. You may also claim Aged Pension benefits after 10 years of residency.

You can also include an additional applicant in your visa application, whether that be your spouse/partner, or a dependent child aged under 23 or over 23 if they are dependent due to a partial or total physical or mental disability.

Although a SC173 cannot be renewed or extended, applicants can apply for a SC143 after holding a SC173 if they wish to live permanently in Australia. This may be ideal for some applicants wishing to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

Visa Fees

The cost for applying directly for a SC143 is AUD47,755, with an extra fee for each additional applicant. This fee is paid for in two instalments, one at the time of application and the other before your visa is granted.

If you were to apply for this visa as a two-step process, first you would pay AUD31,930 (plus additional applicants fees) for the temporary SC173 visa. Then, after 2 years, you would apply for the permanent SC143 visa and pay AUD19,785 (plus additional applicant fees).
